When I look at these paintings I feel terror and delight at the same time.
I was in grade four in a new town & at a new school when I fell ill with a flu and a brutal fever ensued. These paintings by Seonna Hong remind me of the strange nightmares I had at that time.
In these works garish and large florals are treated to pastel washes that obscure and sometimes reveal the pattern beneath. Black geometric trajectories weave their way through pointy-branched trees on a scale that overwhelms the anonymous child-like figures with muted facial features or heads turned away.
These beautifully dynamic works reveal a battle-field between the organic and the superficial within a complex composition.
